<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The term “professional learning community” is used to describe every imaginable combination of individuals
with an interest in education.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
ENSURING THAT STUDENTS LEARN<br />
A CULTURE OF COLLABORATION<br />
A FOCUS ON RESULTS<br />
HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Initiating and sustaining the PLC model concept requires hard work. A school staff must focus on learning
rather than teaching, work collaboratively on matters related to learning, and hold its members accountable for
the kind of results that fuel continual improvement.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The ideal PLC would create structures to promote the powerful, collaborative culture that
characterizes a PLC: a systematic process in which teachers work together in teams to analyze and improve
their classroom practice, engaging in an ongoing cycle of questions that promote deep team learning.
Their collaborative conversations require team members to make goals, strategies, materials, questions,
concerns, and results public. These discussions are explicitly structured to improve the classroom practice of
teachers—individually and collectively.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The description of my current reality of PLC's on my campus is one of mixed results. We don't have total buy in by all the teachers. There are individuals that participate to the fullest and do a majority of the work while some do nothing and coast through our collaboration Mondays. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A critical analysis of my ideal PLC and my current reality is one that again has a few doing most of the work and the majority cruising waiting for the clock to hit 3:00 so they can go home. Good does come out of the PLC's however because those few that do collaborate get a lot of quality work done. The idea of many minds working together on a common goal will create the best situation does work. The misalignment is that not all teachers buy into or make the investment to be a part of the solution but would rather complain and carry on about their own business.</span>Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-78005623235022962852013-07-09T19:34:00.002-07:002013-07-10T12:46:13.078-07:00Voice Thread: Final Project<a href="https://voicethread.com/share/4730859/">Power Point with VoiceThread</a> was a new experience, take a look at what I created!Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-9330803538174419062013-07-08T20:07:00.002-07:002013-07-08T20:07:48.594-07:00Thoughts on diversity in PEDiversity in and of itself is a very broad topic. Diversity in PE can be cultural, gender, abilities, or attitudes. For me all of these aspects need to be thought of when you plan your lessons. Today we talked about the pros and cons single gender classes. Religion plays a big role in the activities or how the activities are performed in class. This gives us a great opportunity to demonstrate tolerance and understanding. The attitude of the PE teacher sets the tone for the entire class. If the PE teacher has great classroom management and uses the different diversity aspects of the class he/she can give life lessons and teach things far beyond the realm of physical education.Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-49260753019548651642013-07-08T19:57:00.001-07:002013-07-08T19:58:16.486-07:00How I like bloggingBeing that this is my first blog or social media avenue that I've ever used, it's a little different for me. I can see how this can be a very effective tool. I personally don't see myself continuing with the blog after the class. I personally would call someone if I needed a resource or if I needed advice on something. I can't see myself telling someone to check out my blog. I believe I'd look up what ever the question was and then tell them what they needed to know. It has however been very interesting and like I said, I do see how it could be very effective.Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-37577100728961608612013-07-08T19:51:00.002-07:002013-07-08T20:17:15.701-07:00Articles on Inclusion, Consultation, and Collaboration<br />

in students’ lives, all individuals with disabilities should be educated with
their peers without disabilities in environments that are inclusive. Having
students be fully included in a general education class is important. In this
article it spoke about that educating students with disabilities within the
general education classroom signals that those students are members within the
classroom and school community, but also are valued members within that
community. The process of inclusion requires efforts by the whole school
community, and should not rest solely on teachers and service para-educators.
School leaders, parents, community members, and other specialist related to the
student must be involved in the process. In the end, inclusion works well in
inclusive schools and communities where everyone communicates with one another

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;">This
article explains how the task of empowering students with disabilities to remain
physically active after graduation is often a struggle for <strong><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">physical</span></strong> educators. One
reason for this is that <strong><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">physical</span></strong>
educators are often left out of the transition-planning process. It states that
in order to be seen as a key member of the special <strong><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">education</span></strong> team, <strong><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">physical</span></strong> educators need to
use the same instructional strategies, theories, and models as special
educators. The Taxonomy for Transition Programming is a commonly used model in
special <strong><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-family: Tahoma; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">education</span></strong>

<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The overarching theme of our
articles<a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="13fc25c47451a6a3__GoBack"></a> was that higher socioeconomic
status (SES) equates with improved health habits and awareness, while lower SES
reduced access to and appreciation of healthy lifestyle choices. For example,
people with socioeconomic advantages were shown to have been less likely to
smoke and more likely to exercise and to eat fruits and vegetables daily.
Meanwhile, lower SES was associated with less health consciousness, stronger
beliefs in the influence of chance on health, less thinking about the future
and lower life expectancies. </span></b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Some of our studies delved deeper
into the underlying causes of this health gap and the corresponding trend of
childhood obesity among families of lower socioeconomic classes. According to
the researchers, the reasons included “differences in the availability of
healthier foods in homes and schools, as well as the availability of safe
environments for physical activity.” They point out that minority and
low-income children “watch more television than white, non-poor children and
are potentially exposed to more commercials advertising high-calorie,
low-nutrient food during an average hour of TV programming” and that “
neighborhoods where low-income and minority children live typically have more
fast-food restaurants and fewer vendors of healthful foods than do wealthier or
predominantly white neighborhood.” </span></b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Other studies showed that African
American youth “suffer fatal drowning events at significantly higher rates when
compared with white peers.” Incredibly, drowning is the second leading cause of
death for adolescent black males and the authors point to racial factors and
socioeconomic causes such as a lack of access to public pools and poor parental
education. </span></b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Access to health information and to
health professionals in poor rural areas was also highlighted, especially when
it came to serving the needs of at-risk populations and students with
disabilities. For example, “only half of health service providers in surveyed
low socioeconomic areas of Alabama teach healthy behaviors (diet, exercise, hygiene)
and access clinical resources for their patients with disabilities.” And while,
nationally, the ratio of children with diabetes to the number of pediatric
endocrinologists who treat them was shown to be about 290 to 1, across the more
urban affluent Northeast that ratio was reduced to 144 to 1. Not surprisingly,
the ratio of youth with diabetes to specialists dropped to between 335 and 370
to one in more rural economically depressed areas. </span></b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">All of these access and attitudinal
factors taken together were, in turn, associated with unhealthy behavioral
choices--independent of age, sex, and how people rated their own health. And
these findings weren't just confined to the United States. Throughout the
world, studies show that a lower health factor and lower life expectations
correlate directly to lower SES. </span></b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 16pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">It can be argued then that helping
every child access the tools they need to craft a healthy life, regardless of
their socioeconomic status, is one of the most pressing issues of our day.
After looking at all available research, multiple authors concluded that
“winning the fight against childhood obesity in minority and low-income
communities will depend on the nation's will to change the social and physical
environments in which these communities exist.” We would argue that maybe, as
physical educators, we have the opportunity to win the fight one child at a

<br />
Steve Wampler attended a camp for kids with disabilities for several summers. He heard that it was going to be closed and he advised his wife that he's love to buy the camp but not charge the campers any fees. So as a fund raiser for his non-profit organization he thought he might be able to raise some money if he climbed EL Capitan Peak in Yosimite. This task is hard in and of itself but Steve Wampler has Cerebral Palsy. With each pull of his handle, which was fixed to the rope, he ascended the peak at 2" to 6" at a time. The climb took six days but ....the camp is open and running because of it. The above video tells a little bit how it all started. In 2010 Steve completed his quest!Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-56873248438659467382013-07-01T17:42:00.001-07:002013-07-01T17:42:31.985-07:00Swimming with friendsThursday we went out to the Durham pool and swam with Mrs. Erickson's class of special needs kids. My partner for the day was Rachel and she, along with Sam did a tremendous job with a female student. Rachel was advised by an assistant that the student was afraid of the water and probably wouldn't do much. Rachel and Sam first talked to her and the assistant was right, the student clung to the side of the pool for life. Through teamwork, persuasion, and alittle trickery they had her bobbing, high fiving and letting them drag her out into the center of the pool. It was fun to watch. Great job Sam and Rachel.Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-17955168322032750152013-06-26T18:59:00.000-07:002013-06-26T18:59:12.221-07:00Local Resources for the disabled<br />

Give a few examples and use a personal anecdote to support your view. <br />
<br />
Communication is key in collaboration because without it there is no collaboration. Communication is the key to a successful relationship. It doesn't matter what kind of relationship, personal, professional, or social. Communication is going to make it work or not work. Collaboration is the bouncing ideas off one another to get to a common goal. There has to be one common goal or one focal point. All the discussion and idea sharing is for the group(collaborators) to come to that goal or reach that focal point. A personal anecdote of mine is on a SWAT callout we as a team get together to make an entry plan. An entry plan is a plan on how you're going to gain access into the location you desire to get into. One opf the team members had gone into the house before so he knew the layoutr of the place and he also knew that the suspect always ran out side door to the backyard. By him sharing this with the team we positioned the k9 unit in the backyard by the back door. We hit the front of the house, made entry, and as the suspect ran out the side door to the backyard the k9 greeted him, as only a k9 can. Collaboration was the key to our success.Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25871781439410906.post-3791714275970807212013-06-25T17:54:00.000-07:002013-06-25T17:54:52.167-07:00your thoughts and opinions about your frame of reference and the collaborative process <br />

<br />
<br />
My thoughts and opinions about my frame of reference is one that has several different aspects and experiences all mixed together. My experience of losing my dad at the age of 13 and having great coaches after that helped shape my beliefs, and value system. My athletic background and experiences along with being a former Police Officer also has shaped my attitude on life. There's not to many situations that are more intense than playing football in the SEC or going into a house on a SWAT call with an armed barricaded subject. I believe all of our life's experiences shape our frame of reference. My thoughts on the collaborative process is one that it is a very necessary. In my previous occupation as well as coaching collaboration is a vital element for success. This is my first blog ever. I'm a APE and General Ed PE teacher at Pioneer Valley High School, which is in Santa Maria Ca. I am 46 yrs old and I just completed my first year of teaching. I was previouisly a Police Officer for the city of Santa Maria and was recently medically retired. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Florida where I attended on a football scholarship. People ask if I played with anyone they might know and my go to guy is Emmit Smith who was our tailback. I have coached football at PV for the last four years and have enjoyed every minute of it. As a Police Officer you think you're pro active but really you are more reactive than anything else. As a teacher my students are stuck with me 5 days a week for 90 minutes a period. I'll have a bigger impact on them as a teacher than a police officer, in my opinion. I look forward to reading all your blogs and learning more about you guys.Baldy5150http://www.blogger.com/profile/11745820125904701291noreply@blogger.com1
